QCPD files criminal rap over 15 fire deaths

MANILA, Philippines — A criminal charge has been filed against the remaining incorporators of a company operating a residential building that caught fire in Barangay Tandang Sora on Aug. 31, leaving 15 people dead, the Quezon City government confirmed yesterday.

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) filed a charge of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide against the surviving incorporators of MGC Warehouse Inc., identified as Catherine Sy, Lina Cavilte, Johanna Cavilte and Geoffrey Cavilte.

Fifteen people, including company owner Michael Cavilte, died in the blaze that struck the residential unit-turned-factory.

The charge was filed before the city prosecutor’s office after a special panel formed by the city government and a QCPD task force pursued separate investigations into the incident.

The QCPD investigators located the families of the fire victims, many of whom were workers in the factory.

Mayor Joy Belmonte welcomed the filing of the criminal charge, saying it reflects the city government’s commitment to provide justice to the victims.

“We hope that through this development, justice will be served to the 15 individuals who perished during that unfortunate incident. We appreciate the effort of the (QCPD) for being committed to ferret out the truth,” she said.

Belmonte earlier called for the implementation of reforms in the Bureau of Fire Protection-Quezon City Fire District and called for the relief of its chief, as well as the head of its fire prevention branch that undertakes inspections.

Belmonte also committed to pursue administrative charges against local officials if the investigation would show that they are also liable for the incident.

QCPD director Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan, in a statement released by the city government, lauded those who were part of the police investigation.

“They have shown exceptional resolve in their mission to bring those responsible to account and provide solace to the victims and their families. I also extend my gratitude to the community for its continued support and cooperation to solve the incident,” Maranan said.

“Together, as one united force, we will strive to prevent such tragedies in the future and ensure the safety and well-being of all our residents,” he added.
