MANILA, Philippines — The low-pressure area spotted off Central Luzon entered the Philippine area of responsibility yesterday afternoon and intensified into Tropical Depression Jenny, according to the state weather bureau.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Jenny may intensify into a typhoon before its passes over the northeastern part of Luzon.

PAGASA said the trough of Jenny would continue to bring rains over parts of the country this weekend.

Jenny was monitored 1,410 kilometers east of Central Luzon as of 3 p.m. It was carrying maximum sustained winds of 45 kms per hour and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

PAGASA said Jenny is forecast to intensify and may reach tropical storm category today. The weather system may be upgraded into a typhoon category by Wednesday.

The typhoon may make a close approach or landfall over Batanes-Babuyan or the northeast section of Cagayan.

PAGASA said tropical cyclone wind signals may be raised over northern Luzon by Sunday or earlier as Jenny makes its way toward the country’s landmass.

Jenny is expected to bring rains over the western portions of Central and Southern Luzon.

The trough of the cyclone will bring scattered rains over Bicol, Eastern Visayas and Caraga.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila, Mimaropa, Calabarzon, Western and Central Visayas and the rest of Mindanao may experience cloudy skies with rains due to the southwest monsoon.

The trough of Jenny and localized thunderstorms will bring isolated rains over the rest of Luzon.

PAGASA warned the public of flash floods or landslides during heavy rain.
