Bayani Fernando laid to rest

MANILA, Philippines — Former Marikina mayor and congressman Bayani Fernando was laid to rest yesterday at the Loyola Memorial Park.

Hundreds of Fernando’s supporters joined his widow, Maria Lourdes Carlos-Fernando, in the funeral procession at around 9 a.m.

Some of the supporters carried pink umbrellas and helmets, which is Fernando’s favorite color.

Fire trucks and other first responder vehicles blared their emergency sirens as the white casket carrying Fernando’s remains was buried.

Prior to Fernando’s interment, a mass was held at the Queen of Angels Chapel Riverbank at around 7 a.m.

The 77-year-old Fernando, who also served as chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, died from injuries after he reportedly fell from the roof of his house.

He was rushed to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
