MANILA, Philippines — The crime volume in the country this year has decreased by nearly eight percent, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported yesterday.

PNP data showed there were 140,778 crimes recorded from Jan. 1 to Sept. 15, lower by 7.84 percent compared to 152,753 crimes during the same period in 2022.

“The PNP has been working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of our beloved nation,” PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. said during the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City.

Acorda said lawmen seized P7.2 billion worth of illegal drugs in 34,496 operations across the country in 2023.

Up to 54,653 wanted persons were arrested, including 56 with rewards for their capture.  At least 54,653 loose firearms were also seized by lawmen.

Acorda said the PNP has intensified police presence and visibility in crime-prone areas and places of convergence to protect the public from criminals.
