Volcanic smog detected anew in Taal

MANILA, Philippines — Volcanic smog or vog has been observed again in Taal Volcano.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said vog was monitored yesterday amid the upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the main crater lake.

Phivolcs said plumes that reached 3,000 meters drifted northwest and northeast.

Volcanic smog has affected residents around the volcano since early this month.

The Department of Health had warned the public on the adverse effects of vog, a type of air pollution, which contains volcanic gas such as sulfur dioxide.

Sulfur dioxide emissions in Taal Volcano reached 3,264 tons per day yesterday.

Two volcanic earthquakes, one of which lasted for two minutes, were also monitored.

Phivolcs said Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, indicating low-level unrest.

Entry into Taal Volcano island, which is considered a permanent danger zone, is prohibited due to possible steam-driven or phreatic explosions as well as volcanic earthquakes and ashfall.
