Cagayan sore eyes cases increase

Jun Elias - The Philippine Star

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Philippines — Cases of sore eyes in Cagayan, particularly among elementary students, have been increasing, the Provincial Epidemiology and Surveilance Unit (PESU) reported yesterday.

Up to 40 cases were reported daily in the province, with this city recording the highest number of infections, PESU coordinator Nestor Santiago said.

He said school administrators and teachers should focus on the situation of their students to avoid the spread of sore eyes.

Aisha Rowena Arce of the Department of Health-Cagayan Valley regional office said the increase in cases is due to the changing weather conditions.

Arce said sore eyes can be avoided by maintaining good hygiene. She urged the public not to believe claims that breast milk or urine can treat sore eyes.
