PNP tightens transport security after bomb threat

MANILA, Philippines — Police have beefed up security in all transportation systems across the country in the wake of the bomb threat that hit the Metro Manila Rail Transit System facility on Friday.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. issued the directive to all police units to ensure the safety and security of the riding public.

Acorda has also ordered a probe of the threat, specifically to determine the person behind an e-mail message that warned of a bomb explosion affecting the rail system.

The e-mail was sent by a person claiming to be Takahiro Karasawa, a Japanese lawyer, who warned that he set a high-performance bomb in the rail system.

Acorda reminded the public to refrain from posting and sharing unverified information that can cause panic.

Under Presidential Decree 1727, malicious dissemination of false information or the willful making of any threat concerning bombs, explosives or any similar devices or means is unlawful, with perpetrators facing a prison term of not more than five years or a fine of not more than P40,000.

Acorda said no threat was found on the rail system after an inspection.
