Over 100 mayors sign good governance pledge

MANILA, Philippines — More than 100 mayors from different parts of the country have signed a manifesto committing to “uphold the principles of good governance” and serve the best interests of their constituents.

The Mayors for Good Governance was formally launched at the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City on Aug. 24.

Among its convenors were Mayors Benjamin Magalong of Baguio, Joy Belmonte of Quezon City, Marcy Teodoro of Marikina, Rommel Arnado of Kauswagan in Lanao del Norte, Sitti Hataman of Isabela in Basilan and Felipe Remollo of Dumaguete.

Signatories of the manifesto committed to a “comprehensive blueprint” that would guide their actions throughout their term.

“We vow to maintain the highest standards of integrity and transparency in all aspects of governance. Our actions and decisions will be driven by honesty and accountability, ensuring that the public’s trust in our office remains our foundation for our service,” read the manifesto.

“We shall embrace a strong public service orientation, putting the welfare and needs of our citizens at the forefront of our agenda. Our decisions will prioritize the common good over personal or political gain,” it added.

The mayors also committed to recognize the importance of citizen participation and empowerment, as well as the role of the youth in governance and decision-making.

They also pledged to manage public funds prudently and responsibly, saying their budget allocations will be directed toward projects and programs that yield the greatest benefit to constituents.

“We affirm our dedication to upholding the rule of law and respecting the rights and liberties of all citizens. Our administration will be fair and just, ensuring that justice is served without bias or discrimination,” read the manifesto.

“We will embrace innovation and modern technology to improve governance and public services. By leveraging advancements in technology, we aim to streamline processes and make government services more accessible to all,” it added.

The mayors also committed to foster equitable development and actively seek collaboration and partnership with various stakeholders.

They also committed to continuous learning and professional development to enhance their leadership skills and stay updated on the best practices in governance.

Aside from Belmonte and Teodoro, among the signatories from Metro Manila were Mayors Ruffy Biazon of Muntinlupa, John Rey Tiangco of Navotas and Vico Sotto of Pasig.
