MANILA, Philippines — Wearing of face masks in churches under the Archdiocese of Manila (RCAM) is now optional although alcohol dispensers should be made available to parishioners to maintain sanitation, Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula announced yesterday.

Advincula reiterated his advice to the clergy and the faithful that masking in churches is no longer mandatory.

However, during other liturgical celebrations done outside churches such as the anointing of the sick and confession, the priest must properly discern when to observe COVID protocols.

“We encourage everyone to make it a habit to sanitize hands before, during and after every church activity or whenever necessary. Ministers of communion must sanitize their hands before distributing communion to the faithful,” Advincula said.

Last month, President Marcos lifted the state of public health emergency as the COVID situation in the country improved.
