Makati to aid residents affected by land dispute

Neil Jayson Servallos - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The local government of Makati will provide aid to residents affected by the Supreme Court (SC)’s final ruling on the land dispute between the city and Taguig.

Last June, the SC affirmed that the 729-hectare Bonifacio Global City and nearby villages are within Taguig’s jurisdiction.

As a result, around 300,000 Makati residents will become constituents of Taguig.

“I am concerned for the sick who are being cared for at our health centers and at the Ospital ng Makati. They enjoy benefits and free healthcare that only Makati provides. What will happen to them?” Mayor Abby Binay said in a Facebook video message yesterday.

Makati residents have been enjoying social protection benefits, including a yellow card for free healthcare.

“I am worried for our senior citizens who are receiving annual cash allowances and other special benefits from Makati that help meet their needs. How will they cope now?” Binay said.

She claimed that Taguig City is unlikely to match the benefits that Makati residents have been receiving.

Over 3,000 learners will also be affected by Taguig’s scholarship guidelines for graduating senior high school students, as they are required to have three-year residency and must be registered voters in Taguig, according to Binay.
