‘Time, elements weakened Lapu-Lapu monument’

MANILA, Philippines — The Lapu-Lapu monument in Rizal Park has weakened through the years, according to the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP).

In a recent letter sent by NMP director general Jeremy Barns to former senator Richard Gordon, he explained that “the monument, after technical assessment as well as consultation with its sculptor, has been found to require structural repair relative to its internal frame and foundation which, due primarily to exposure to the elements, has apparently weakened to a degree that prompts concerns on our part regarding its continued preservation and integrity as well as of public safety should no action be taken.”

The National Parks and Development Committee (NPDC) said yesterday that the jurisdiction over the Lapu-Lapu monument in Rizal Park was turned over to the NMP in January 2021 and the park’s entire eastern section on March 31, 2022.

In a statement, the NPDC said that by virtue of Republic Act 11333 or the Museum of the Philippines Act, the entire eastern section of Rizal Park, now known as the National Museum Complex, has been placed under the jurisdiction of the NMP.

The NPDC issued the statement after Gordon said he was disturbed by a plan to move the Lapu-Lapu monument from the Agrifina Circle to a still unknown location.
