Belmonte: Observe measures vs dengue, leptospirosis

Elizabeth Marcelo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte yesterday called on the residents to observe preventive measures amid the rising cases of dengue and leptospirosis in the city.

“To make our community safe from dengue and leptospirosis, let us start with protecting our families by cleaning our surroundings and making sure that preventive measures are in place,” Belmonte said in a statement.

She made the appeal as the city’s Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit (CESU) recorded 1,160 cases of dengue and 32 leptospirosis from Jan. 1 to June 24.

The CESU reported one death due to dengue in Barangay Krus na Ligas. Four deaths due to leptospirosis were recorded in Barangays Payatas, Old Balara, Pasong Tamo and Talipapa.

Belmonte encouraged residents to get tested for the dengue virus if symptoms manifest, and to practice self-protection measures such as wearing of pants and long-sleeved shirts as well as applying mosquito repellent.

She said residents must also support fogging and cleanup activities in identified hotspots.

The city government and the barangays conducted “search and destroy” operations to eliminate the breeding places of mosquitoes carrying the dengue virus.

Belmonte said barangay leaders must conduct regular cleanup drives.

The city health department reminded residents to avoid wading in potentially contaminated water, wear protective clothes, stay away from dead or sick animals and cover skin lesions with waterproof dressing.
