2 fish vendors dead in Maguindanao del Sur ambush
COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Suspected extortionists killed two fish vendors in an ambush in South Upi, Maguindanao del Sur at dusk Saturday.
In a statement Monday, the Maguindanao del Sur Provincial Police Office identified the fish vendors as Rick Jeff Berman and Danny Ramas, both residing in the town proper of South Upi.
Personnel of the South Upi Municipal Police Station told reporters that Berman and Ramas were riding a motorcycle together on their way home from Barangay Sanduagan when they were attacked by gunmen.
Berman died on the spot while Ramas succumbed to bullet wounds while being treated at a hospital.
Relatives of the slain fish vendors said armed men whose demand for “protection money” was rejected by the victims could be responsible for the ambush.
Around 10 motorists were shot dead in South Upi in the past 14 months. The mayor of the municipality, Reynalbert Insular, twice survived roadside bombings since early 2022.
Local officials told reporters that Berman and Ramas were longtime friends and partners in their small-scale fish vending business.
