LRT-2, MRT-3 to give free rides to Filipino seafarers on June 25
MANILA, Philippines — Filipino seafarers could save up on train commutes this Sunday in celebration of the "Day of the Filipino Seafarer", days after the Department of Transportation announced an upcoming fare hike for the two Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems.
The LRT-2 and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) on Thursday said that seafarers could avail the free rides simply by showing their Seafarer's Record Book or Seafarer Identity Document to railway personnels.
"The MRT-3 and DOTr acknowledges the huge contribution of our seafarers in advancing the nation's economy," said DOTr Assistant Secretary for Railways and MRT-3 office-in-charge Jorjette Aquino in Filipino.
"Through our simple gesture like the LIBRENG SAKAY, we would like to show our salute and respect to their sacrifices."
The free rides will be given from 5:30 a.m. until the end of the MRT-3's operation on June 25. The last trip at North Avenue Station starts at 9:30 p.m. while the last trip from Taft Avenue Station is at 10:09 p.m.
LRT-2's libreng sakay however would last the whole day: it only runs from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The LRT-1 and the Philippine National Railways still has not announced any free rides for seafarers on the said date.
The "Day of the Filipino Seafarer" is an annual celebration launched by the Maritime Industry Authority.
