Negros Occidental hog industry losses reach P147.5 million
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Losses to the swine industry in Negros Occidental due to hog cholera and other diseases have reached P147.5 million.
Swine deaths have increased to 13,107 as of Friday or 9.16 percent of the total hog population in the province, according to the provincial veterinary office.
The pig deaths were recorded in 135 barangays in 17 local government units in Negros Occidental and had affected 2,497 hog raisers.
Hog cholera and African swine fever cases detected in this city, Silay, Victorias and Pulupandan had been blamed for the swine deaths.
The provincial government is providing P10 million in financial aid to affected hog raisers. They will receive P2,000 in financial aid aside from free range chickens.
Gov. Eugenio Lacson said hog raisers who disposed infected pigs into the rivers and other waterways would not receive any assistance.
Lacson said such incidents were reported in San Enrique, Bago and in this city.
