ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines — A junior officer of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) was gunned down while a woman hit by a stray bullet was wounded in this city on Thursday.
Ens. Jenard Santos, 30, an intelligence officer of the PCG office here, was about to ride his motorcycle parked outside the PCG headquarters when unidentified men arrived and opened fire, Col. Alexander Lorenzo, Zamboanga City police director, said.
Santos suffered three gunshot wounds and was declared dead on arrival in a hospital.
Police said Mushayra Tiblani, 23, who was in the area when the shooting occurred, was hit by a stray bullet in the shoulder. She was brought to a hospital for treatment.
The assailants fled on foot toward an unknown direction.
Lorenzo said probers have identified several persons of interest in the killing.
He said Santos was transferred to this city from General Santos after receiving threats following anti-smuggling operations.
