4 NPA rebels slain in Northern Samar clash
CATARMAN, Northern Samar, Philippines — Four communist rebels were killed in an encounter with soldiers belonging to the 43rd Infantry Battalion (43IB) in Barangay Mabini in Catarman, Northern Samar on Sunday, the military reported yesterday.
The fatalities, who have yet to be identified, were said to remnants of a unit of the New People’s Army’s Eastern Visayas regional party committee.
Lt. Col. Manuel Degay Jr., 43rd IB commander, said there was no reported casualty on the side of the government.
He said the rebels clashed with government troopers who responded to reports that a group of armed men were extorting money and items from villagers.
The military said two M16 rifles, two .45-caliber pistols, magazines with ammunition and personal belongings were recovered at the scene.
