MANILA, Philippines — The Makati government launched yesterday the first sightseeing bus tour, making the city the pilot site for the Department of Tourism (DOT)’s recovery program to promote Metro Manila through a modern shuttle system and a mobile app.

Mayor Abby Binay said the DOT’s “Hop On, Hop Off” (HOHO) bus tour would operate from Wednesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It features the city’s heritage sites, museums and lifestyle centers through contactless travel options, which allow tourists to explore strategic hubs at ease.

“Makati boasts a rich tapestry of history, art and natural beauty that deserved to be celebrated. With the launching of the HOHO bus tour, we aim to bring this exceptional experience to the forefront, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the city’s unique heritage,” Binay said.

Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco attended the launching of the project.

Binay said the tour would have eight stops: Glorietta 2, Washington SyCip Park, RCBC Plaza, Circuit Makati, Century City, Museo ng Makati, Rockwell Center and Ayala Triangle.

The DOT set the cost of a one-day pass at P990, providing travelers with unlimited access to HOHO bus stops.

To participate in one of the tours, the Makati government said tourists should download the HOHO mobile app and sign up.

Residents and city hall employees with Makatizen cards may avail themselves of a 40 percent discount when they take the HOHO buses.

“Through this collaboration between the DOT and the city government of Makati, we are opening doors to a new era of tourism. Together, we are creating opportunities for residents and visitors to discover Makati’s heritage and lifestyle,” Binay said.

The DOT said the program was patterned after the hop on, hop off buses in Abu Dhabi, Argentina, London, Madrid, New York and Singapore. – Ghio Ong
