AFP-NPA Negros clashes: 5 rebels slain
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Five New People’s Army rebels were killed in encounters with Army soldiers in Barangay Quintin Remo in Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental yesterday.
Brig. Gen. Orlando Edralin, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, said four communist rebels were killed in an encounter in Sitio Napilu-an while another was slain in a clash in Sitio Oway-Oway.
Edralin said soldiers belonging to the 62nd Infantry Battalion (IB) launched an offensive after receiving reports that the rebels were planning atrocities in Moises Padilla and La Castellana towns.
Second Lt. Mary Liza Joy de Guzman, 62nd IB civil-military operations officer, said soldiers discovered the bodies of the fatalities during clearing operations.
An M16 assault rifle, two caliber .38 revolvers, a KG9 automatic pistol, two homemade 12-gauge shotguns, four rifle grenades and assorted ammunition were among those recovered at the scene.
The identities of the fatalities have yet to be determined.
Members of the Moises Padilla Municipal Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office retrieved the bodies of the rebels.
