2 Abus surrender; 11 guns turned over in Basilan
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Two Abu Sayyaf bandits surrendered as residents turned over 10 unlicensed guns to the military in Basilan on Tuesday.
The surrenderees, identified only as Hasan and Dasti, yielded to the 18th Infantry Battalion and Mayor Jaydeefar Lajid in Al-Barka town, Brig. Gen. Domingo Gobway, commander of the Joint Task Force Basilan and 101st Infantry Battalion, said.
Gobway said the former militants turned over an M16 rifle and an M1 Garand.
The residents surrendered an M1 Carbine, an M1 Garand, a shotgun, two KG9 submachine guns, an M79 and five M203 40mm grenade launchers.
Gobway said the turnover of the firearms was a result of the military’s relentless campaign against loose firearms as part of the Small Arms and Light Weapons program.
He said the project resulted in the turnover of 381 assorted firearms and stenciling of 4,323 others since it was implemented in April 2021. – Rainier Allan Ronda
