Magnitude 5.8 quake shakes Isabela

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.8 earthquake jolted Isabela yesterday.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Director Teresito Bacolcol said the epicenter of the quake, which occurred at around 8:49 a.m., was located 15 kilometers north of Maconacon.

The quake was felt at Intensity 5, which is classified as strong, in Peñablanca, Enrile and Tuguegarao City in Cagayan.

It was felt at Intensity 4 or moderately strong in Batac, Ilocos Norte.

Phivolcs said Instrumental Intensity 5 was recorded in Peñablanca and Instrumental Intensity 4 in Gonzaga, both in Cagayan.

Instrumental Intensity 3 was recorded in Ilagan, Isabela and Instrumental Intensity 2 in Casiguran, Aurora; Pasuquin, Laoag and Batac in Ilocos Norte; Vigan, Ilocos Sur; Santiago, Isabela; Tabuk in Kalinga, and Madella in Quirino.

Seven more quakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.8 to 4.2, with the epicenter traced, also in Maconacon, occurred from 9:11 a.m. to 9:25 a.m.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines said there was no reported damage of the runway and tower building at the Laoag airport following the quake. – Artemio Dumlao, Rudy Santos
