7,500 Bilibid inmates set for transfer
MANILA, Philippines — A total of 7,500 inmates of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa are expected to be transferred to other penal farms this year, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said yesterday.
The BuCor said the inmates would be moved from the NBP’s minimum and medium security compounds to the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm, Leyte Regional Prison and Davao Prison and Penal Farm.
The three penal facilities will receive 2,500 inmates each, the BuCor said.
BuCor chief Gregorio Catapang Jr. said the remaining Bilibid convicts would be transferred in batches to regional prisons from 2024 to 2027 as the agency prepares for the closure of the national penitentiary in 2028.
Catapang said the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Occidental Mindoro would be converted into a facility for heinous crime convicts.
The BuCor has been planning to transfer inmates to other prisons to decongest the NBP.
Data from the BuCor showed that 51,134 inmates are being held in seven prisons and penal farms nationwide.
