4 rescued as boat capsizes off Quezon

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — Four persons were rescued after their boat capsized in the waters off Alabat Island in Quezon province over the weekend.

Godfrey Almojar, 45, captain of B/V Fren, and his crewmembers Mark Aron Mafe, 18; Engelbert Magon, 44, and Rolly Onoya, 20, were spotted drifting alongside the Fren by a team from the Alabat disaster risk reduction and management office.

The boatmen were brought to the Alabat Island District Hospital for medical treatment.

Almojar told probers that they were headed for Alabat from the port of Atimonan when they encountered big waves and strong winds at around 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Reports said a netizen posted the sea accident on social media and sought the help of authorities.

The post said that a boat with four persons on board had capsized in Lamon Bay in Atimonan.

Meanwhile, in Pangasinan, a factory worker drowned during a company outing in Lingayen.

Jaime Mendoza, 43, was swimming with his co-workers in Barangay Libsong when he was carried away by the current at around 2 p.m. on Sunday

Mendoza’s friends tried but failed to rescue him. They sought the help of the local rescue team, which recovered the victim’s body.

Mendoza was declared dead on arrival at the Lingayen District Hospital. – Cesar Ramirez
