Maguindanao del Sur village chief slain in ambush

Cotabato City, Philippines — A barangay chairman was killed in an attack by unidentified assailants in Ampatuan, Maguindanao del Sur on Saturday.

Danny Angkay of Barangay Salaman, Lebak, Sultan Kudarat, and his companions were in a van when motorcycle-riding men waylaid them along the Cotabato-Isulan Highway, according to the provincial police.

Angkay died at the scene due to multiple gunshot wounds. He was reportedly liked by his constituents for being approachable and supportive of the municipal government’s peace and reconciliation programs for Muslim and Christian communities.

Angkay came from a nearby town where he visited his father and was on his way home with his companions when they were attacked.

Meanwhile, a barangay councilman was killed in another attack in Parang, Maguindanao del Norte yesterday.

Abdulmalik Uban of Barangay Polloc and his wife were in a car when the assailants shot them repeatedly.

Uban died at the scene while his wife was taken to a hospital for treatment.
