MANILA, Philippines — About 10,000 jobs in South Korea are open to Filipino welders and other foreign workers, local recruitment consultant Raul de Vera said yesterday.
He said he received information that South Korea is looking to hire 10,000 welders for shipbuilding.
The recruitment will be done through private agencies under the current accreditation rules of the Department of Migrant Workers, according to De Vera.
He also said the South Korean government has issued a new policy on the hiring of foreign workers.
“The new policy of accepting skilled workers is very much different from our current government-to-government hiring program,” De Vera said.
In 2007, the government took over the deployment of Filipino workers to South Korea under the Employment Permit System.
Then labor secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas negotiated with the South Korean government for a government-to-government hiring arrangement due to numerous complaints of excessive placement fees collected by local agencies.
