Soldier, rebel killed in Northern Samar clash

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines — A member of the Scout Ranger Battalion and a New People’s Army (NPA) rebel were killed in an encounter in Barangay Geparaayan De Turag in Silvino Lobos town on Monday.

The fatalities have yet to be identified.

Capt. Jefferson Mariano, 8th Infantry Division public affairs office chief, said an M16 rifle was recovered at the clash site.

Col. Efren Morados, 803rd Infantry Brigade commander, said government troopers were responding to reports of extortion by a group of rebels when the clash occurred.

“This time a very young soldier offered the ultimate sacrifice... We will relentlessly pursue the rebels until they stop their terroristic acts against the people,” Morados said.
