Artemio Dumlao - The Philippine Star

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — A large part of the Baguio City Public Market was destroyed in a fire that broke out on Saturday night.

The blaze started at around 11 p.m. and gutted the entire Block 4 as well as half of Block 3 and the market’s section for cooking pots and pans.

Authorities declared fire out at 4:30 a.m.

Baguio fire marshal Supt. Marisol Odiver said the blaze originated from the Block 4 extension area, specifically at the second-hand goods section.

Probers have yet to determine the cause of the fire, which they estimated to have destroyed P24 million worth property.

Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong said around 1,700 of the 3,900 stalls were damaged.

Firefighters from the neighboring towns of La Trinidad and Tuba in Benguet were among those who responded.
