Bacolod eyes Guinness record for mass wedding
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The city government of Bacolod is targeting a Guinness record for the most number of couples who tied the knot in a single venue.
Up to 2,023 couples participated in the mass wedding titled “Officially, You and Me sa ’23,” which was held at the Bacolod City Government Center on Saturday.
“I asked the Guinness (Book of) World Records if we could qualify. There’s no record yet of such an event held in just one venue. They have records for multiple venues of mass weddings,” Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, who officiated the ceremony, said.
The mass wedding was witnessed by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, who represented her husband President Marcos.
Benitez said one of the brides was pregnant and undergoing labor pains, but refused to be brought to a hospital and insisted on attending the ceremony.
Cash prizes worth P2 million were raffled away to the couples. Of the amount, P1 million came from the First Lady.
Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya and Mayor Benitez gave P500,000 each.
