MANILA, Philippines — Amid opposition from several transport groups, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said yesterday it would conduct public consultations first before opening 100,000 slots for transport network vehicle service (TNVS).

Seven transport groups are opposing the opening of the franchise slots for TNVs, citing its adverse effects on the traffic situation as well as public utility vehicle operators and drivers.

LTFRB chief Teofilo Guadiz said all factors would be considered in the awarding of the franchise slots, and that it would be spread out to other regions in the Visayas and Mindanao to serve commuters in those areas.

Guadiz clarified that interested transport network firms would be allowed to participate in the bidding and that the slots would not be offered to only one company.

The LTFRB and Malacañang announced the opening of the franchise slots for TNVS following an investment pledge made by ride-hailing company Grab.

The board said the opening of TNVS franchises would not only help in providing more robust public transportation options, but will also create jobs.
