MANILA, Philippines — A bill seeking to legalize and regulate the operation of motorcycle taxis has been filed in the House of Representatives, with the objective of creating more jobs and generating additional revenue for the government.

“Due to inadequate public transport options, many Filipinos turn to private vehicles. But one solution that has proven to be reliable, safe, convenient and affordable is motorcycle taxi,” Manila third district Rep. Joel Chua said in filing House Bill 7034.

Chua said the lack of mobility and traffic congestion are derailing the country’s economic growth.

“This is also due to the growing need for more alternative transport options in the country,” he said.

If passed into law, Chua said the Motorcycles-for-Hire Act would allow the regulated operation of motorcycle taxis to provide commuters an alternative mode of transportation.

“This must be standardized to ensure that the interest of the general public is protected,” he said.

Chua said the services of motorcycles-for-hire would help fill a transportation gap, efficiently transport passengers and create job opportunities for riders.
