MANILA, Philippines — A total of 340 inmates were released yesterday from seven penal farms supervised by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).
Of the number, 31 prisoners were freed from Davao Prison and Penal Farm, 154 from New Bilibid Prison, 31 from Leyte Regional Prison, 33 from Correctional Institute for Women, 21 from Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm, 27 from Sablayan Prison and another 27 from San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm.
An inmate of the Philippine Military Academy was also released.
BuCor data showed that 128 prisoners were freed on parole while 165 had served their maximum sentence with good conduct and time allowance or GCTA. Another inmate was acquitted.
Thirty-five inmates who also served their sentence with GCTA were released based on the approval of the justice secretary under Department Order 953.
The BuCor earlier said it is planning to release more inmates who are qualified for parole to decongest prisons.
