MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) recorded 600 cases of chikungunya across the country last year.

In its latest disease surveillance report, the DOH said the cases were 552 percent higher compared to the 92 reported during the same period in 2021.

Calabarzon logged the highest number of cases with 155 followed by Central Visayas with 127 and Davao, 114.

Davao recorded the highest increase in cases at 11,300 percent or from one to 114; Calabarzon, 1,838 percent or from eight to 155, and Central Visayas, 1,055 percent or from 11 to 127.

Zero deaths from chikungunya were reported in the past two years, data from the DOH’s Epidemiology Bureau showed.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said chikungunya is a mosquito-borne disease like dengue, which causes fever and severe joint pain.

The WHO said severe cases and deaths due to the illness are very rare.
