Creation of 8 new BARMM towns sought
COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Stakeholders are expecting the approval this year of separate proposals that seek to create eight new towns out of the 63 Bangsamoro barangays in Cotabato province.
Residents of the special geographic area (SGA) in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao voted in favor of the inclusion of their barangays in the proposed core territory of BARMM during a plebiscite in 2019.
Kadil Sinolinding, a member of the BARMM parliament, said on Saturday that there were several proposals for the creation of eight municipalities that would cover 63 predominantly Muslim SGA barangays.
“There is a need to establish these municipalities so the new local government units can oversee the communities that were detached from several towns in Cotabato province in 2019,” Sinolinding said.
The BARMM has political and administrative control only over the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi as well as the cities of Cotabato, Lamitan and Marawi.
