NPA rebel slain in Negros

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — A suspected member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed in an encounter in Guihulngan City in Negros Oriental yesterday.

Col. Michael Samson, 303rd Infantry Brigade acting commander, said soldiers belonging to the 62nd Infantry Battalion clashed with five NPA rebels in Sitio Banderahan in Barangay Trinidad.

Samson said a caliber .45 pistol was recovered from the fatality.

In Nueva Ecija, a former NPA medic surrendered in San Jose City on Monday.

Reports reaching Col. Richard Caballero, acting Nueva Ecija police director, said the surrenderee turned over a .38-caliber revolver and a hand grenade.
