MRT-3, LRT-2 post surge in ridership
MANILA, Philippines — State-funded Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) and Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) recorded increases in ridership last year.
The MRT-3 management announced over the weekend that 98,330,683 passengers rode its trains in 2022.
The figure is double the 45.6 million commuters who took the MRT-3 trains in 2021.
The MRT-3 provided free rides to passengers from March to June last year following the rail line’s two-year rehabilitation.
The LRT-2, which runs from Marikina to Recto in Manila, transported 31,629,242 commuters in 2022, higher than the 11.8 million ridership posted in 2021.
Last year, the government allowed public transportation including railways to operate at full capacity as COVID restrictions eased.
