Rebel slain in Negros clash

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines —   A suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrilla was killed in an encounter in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental yesterday.

The military has yet to identify the fatality, who was among a group of armed men harassing residents in Barangay Carabalan, according to Col. Michael Samson, chief of the Army’s 303rd Infantry Brigade.

The firefight lasted five minutes before the armed men retreated, leaving behind their dead comrade.

Aside from the remains of the rebel, the military recovered four rifles, ammunition, grenade launcher and personal belongings at the scene of the encounter, which occurred two days after three suspected NPA rebels were arrested in nearby Calatrava town.

No one was killed or wounded among the troopers.
