3 hurt in Iloilo explosion

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — Three persons were wounded in an explosion that occurred in the storage facility of the Iloilo City police’s Explosives Ordnance Division (EOD) yesterday morning.

The victims were identified as Pat. Shyrinre Manuel, John Mark Garcia and Fernando Sabidalas.

Manuel, a K-9 handler, was brought to the West Visayas State University Medical Center for treatment of injuries in the hands and face.

Garcia and Sabidalas were treated at the scene by the city’s emergency responders. They suffered injuries in the nape and fingers, respectively.

Reports said Manuel was in the kitchen of the EOD building when the explosion occurred at around 10:15 a.m.

Garcia, a telephone lineman, was conducting maintenance work at the EOD building, while Sabidalas was transacting business at the nearby Traffic Enforcement Unit when they were hit by the debris from the explosion.

Police said the storage room serves as an office as well as houses training materials and confiscated ordnance.

Investigation is ongoing.
