DOH: Dengue cases top 200,000

MANILA, Philippines— Dengue cases in the country have breached the 200,000 mark, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

The latest disease surveillance report of the DOH showed that 213,277 dengue cases were reported from Jan. 1 to Nov. 26.

The cases were 182 percent higher compared to the 75,529 reported during the same period last year.

The National Capital Region has the highest number of cases with 24,965 followed by Central Luzon, 42,238, and Calabarzon, 18,589.

Cagayan Valley logged the highest increase in cases at 1,215 percent or from 1,328 to 17,465;  Zamboanga peninsula, 782 percent or from 1,143 to 10,084, and Bangsamoro Autunomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, 653 percent or from 673 to 5,065.

Data from the DOH’s Epidemiology Bureau showed that dengue-related deaths increased this year at 693, a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.3 percent.

During the same period last year, 272 deaths were recorded, a CFR of 0.4 percent.

Central Visayas posted the highest number of dengue-related deaths at 101 followed by Central Luzon with 90 and Western Visayas, 84.

The DOH reiterated its reminder to the public to practice the “4S” strategy to prevent dengue.

The 4S strategy stands for search and destroy breeding places, secure self-protection, seek early consultation and support fogging or spraying in hotspot areas.
