MANILA, Philippines — Fifty elderly inmates of the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa were transferred yesterday from the NBP’s maximum security building to the minimum security compound.

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said the inmates, aged 70 and above, have physical disabilities and comorbidities.

They were transferred to decongest the maximum security compound, the BuCor said.

“This is just the initial transfer of the inmates. We will move more inmates from the maximum security compound regardless of their cases,” acting BuCor chief Gregorio Catapang Jr. said.

Catapang also said he would recommend to President Marcos the grant of executive clemency to over 3,000 inmates nationwide.

In an interview with The STAR, 71-year-old “Lito,” who has been serving time in Bilibid for six years for rape, thanked the government for transferring the inmates to a less congested cell.

A total of 17,816 inmates are being held at the NBP’s maximum compound. The minimum security building houses 1,573 inmates.
