PNP backs proposal to install CCTVs in jails

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police is backing a proposal to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in PNP detention facilities to protect detainees from possible human rights abuses by some erring police officers.
PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said yesterday they have no problem with the suggestion of Sen. Raffy Tulfo to put CCTVs in jails so the inmates are regularly monitored.
The PNP will study if the procurement of CCTVs can be included in its budget proposal in the General Appropriations Act, according to Fajardo.
“Magandang panukala ‘yan. Ang pamunuan ng PNP ay pag-aaralan ‘yan para maisama doon sa ating procurement program,” she said.
While admitting there are some misfits in the police organization, Fajardo said their actions are never tolerated by the PNP and they would face sanctions if caught.
She said the acquisition of CCTVs is not easy as it would entail funding.
Fajardo cited as an example the procurement of body-worn cameras for anti-narcotics officers, which started during the administration of Rodrigo Duterte.
The PNP has nearly 3,000 body cameras for police personnel, she said.
