MANILA, Philippines — Up to 1,211 police officers have been sanctioned by the Philippine National Police (PNP) for various offenses during the administration of President Marcos.

The number represents about 0.53 percent of the 227,000-strong PNP.

Of the figure, 279 were dismissed from the service from July 1 to Dec. 7 due to grave offenses such as extortion and involvement in illegal drugs.

PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin said 472 police personnel were suspended while 79 were demoted.

The remaining 381 were either reprimanded, restricted to quarters, had their salaries forfeited and their privileges withheld.

“The PNP will never tolerate irregularities and breach of discipline in the police service,” Azurin said in a statement.

Azurin has embarked on a campaign to weed out misfits from the police ranks since he took over leadership of the PNP in August.

“We will always be steadfast in our thrust to discipline our personnel while we value each and everyone’s welfare while serving the people,” he said.
