Fishing boat capsizes off Zamboanga; 11 rescued
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Eleven fishermen were rescued when their boat capsized off the coast of this city amid bad weather spawned by the inter-tropical convergence zone on Wednesday, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
The fishing boat, F/B Jaya, was hit by big waves and strong winds in the waters between Tictabon Island and Barangay Mampang at around 10 p.m.
The PCG station mobilized search and rescue operations after receiving a call from residents of Barangay Mampang, Commodore Marco Antonio Gines, PCG district commander for Southwestern Mindanao, said.
Col. Salbino Piad of the police Maritime Unit said two of the fishermen, who managed to swim toward a sandbar, were initially rescued.
Five other fishermen were rescued atop the capsized fishing boat found drifting some 2.5 nautical miles off the coast of Barangay Mariki.
