BuCor lauded for removal of concrete walls in Bilibid
MANILA, Philippines — The Muntinlupa City council has lauded Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) officer-in-charge Gregorio Catapang for his decision to remove the concrete walls built on roads inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) Reservation in Barangay Poblacion.
The concrete walls were ordered put up by suspended BuCor chief Gerald Bantag last year, who insisted that only jail personnel should have access to the roads since the NBP is a government security camp.
Last week, Catapang ordered the concrete walls dismantled.
Councilor Raul Corro, Majority Floor Leader of the city council, commended Catapang for his directive.
Corro said the move of the new BuCor administration is a “step in the right direction.”
He said the concrete walls prevented residents of NHA Southville 3, Katarungan Village 1 and 2 as well as students from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa and Muntinlupa National High School from going to and from the city proper.
“Catapang’s move restores the good relations between the city government and the BuCor, which has existed for several decades since the national penitentiary was established in the 1940s,” Corro said.
The city council of Muntinlupa had declared Bantag persona non grata.
