Ex-Apayao mayor tagged in Isabela prosecutor’s slay falls

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — A former mayor of Conner town in Apayao was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the killing of a deputy city prosecutor in Ilagan, Isabela in June last year.

Leonardo Dangoy, 65, was collared at Camp Gov. Elias K. Bulut Sr. and Training Center in Sta. Lina in Luna town, also in Apayao, Cordillera police director Brig. Gen. Mafelino Bazar said.

Dangoy was brought to the Tabuk police office for documentation before he was turned over to the court.

Apayao Regional Trial Court Branch 26 Judge Neljoe Cortes issued the arrest warrant for murder. No bail was recommended.

Victor Begtang Jr. was in a residential compound in Barangay Malama when a man appeared from behind and shot him several times. The gunman fled on a motorcycle.

Probers have yet to identify the other suspects in Begtang’s murder.
