MANILA, Philippines — More than 130,000 infants and toddlers in Metro Manila remain unprotected against infectious diseases due to lack of immunization, the Department of Health (DOH) reported yesterday.

Data from the DOH showed that less than half or 46 percent of 256,400 children aged zero to 23 months in Metro Manila have been immunized.

Gloria Balboa, DOH National Capital Region director, said the agency launched yesterday a catch-up immunization campaign dubbed “Vax Baby Vax.”

Balboa said the 10-day immunization drive would focus on 137,048 infants and toddlers who remain unvaccinated.

The vaccination campaign will end on Nov. 18.

Balboa said routine immunization provides early protection against vaccine-preventable diseases such as polio, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria and Hepatitis B.

“If the parents are able to bring their children to health centers for routine vaccination, they will benefit by saving money and resources because the strong immunity of children will lessen the risk of hospitalization and expensive medical costs,” Balboa pointed out.

She said parents and guardians would have a sense of assurance and confidence over the health of the family when they ensure the immunization of children.

Balboa urged parents of infants aged 0 to 23 months to visit the nearest health facilities in their areas for vaccination.
