MANILA, Philippines — Makati Mayor Abigail Binay has been recognized by luxury lifestyle magazine Tatler as one of Asia’s most influential leaders this year.

Tatler said Binay has brought her own brand of public service to upgrade Makati as a smart and sustainable city.

“She initiated a digital economy through cashless payments and connected Makati citizens through free WiFi,” it said.

The magazine noted that Binay gained worldwide recognition after the city made it as finalist in the World Smart Cities Award in 2020.

Plans up ahead include projects to make Makati a green city powered by renewable energy, and retrofitted with efficient and sustainable transportation systems, Tatler added.

The local government lauded Binay for her latest achievement.

“Thank you for shaping Makati into a world-class city by promoting a digital economy and green initiatives,” city hall said in a statement.
