DHSUD: 10,000 Marikina workers to benefit from housing project

Elizabeth Marcelo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — At least 10,000 minimum wage earners and government employees in Marikina City will be covered by the Marcos administration’s “Pambansang Pabahay” program, the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) said yesterday.

The DHSUD said the plan was personally discussed by President Marcos with Mayor Marcy Teodoro during the inspection of the Bagong Sibol housing project in Barangay Nangka on Oct. 28.

The DHSUD said the project would be undertaken under the “Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino: Zero ISF (Informal Settler Family) 2028 Program.”

The President discussed with Housing Secretary Jose Acuzar and other officials the master plan for the five-hectare housing project site.

Marcos also hosted a dinner meeting with Acuzar, along with other DHSUD officials, members of his economic team, government financial institutions and executives of private banks, to “rally support for the housing project.”

The program aims to build one million houses per year or a total of six million housing units by the end of Marcos’ term in 2028.

The program also seeks to address the housing backlog projected to be around 6.5 million units by the end of 2022 and expected to increase to 10.9 million by 2028.

The DHSUD has broken ground for the housing program in several areas in Luzon including Marikina, Quezon City and Bataan as well as in Bacolod, Roxas and Iloilo.
