NPA leader killed in Sultan Kudarat
COTABATO CITY, Philippines — A New People’s Army (NPA) leader with 39 pending criminal cases was killed in an encounter with soldiers in Senator Ninoy Aquino, Sultan Kudarat on Monday.
Emmanuel Fernandez suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene, according to Col. Michael Santos, 603rd Infantry Brigade commander.
Fernandez was secretary of the NPA’s Far South Mindanao Region Command, which is operating in Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato.
The group was tagged in bombings of commercial establishments and public transportation over the refusal of their owners to heed extortion demands.
Santos said the military conducted the operation after residents of Barangay Buenaflures reported the presence of Fernandez and his men in the area.
Soldiers said a caliber .45 pistol, an M16 rifle and fragmentation grenades were recovered at the site of the encounter.
