MANILA, Philippines — At least 140 families were left homeless in a fire that reached third alarm in Barangay Tonsuya, Malabon before dawn yesterday.

On her Facebook page, Mayor Jeannie Sandoval said she distributed meals to the families affected by the fire.

The fire reached first alarm at around 2 a.m. and reached third alarm in minutes.

Firefighters took more than four hours to contain the blaze, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection.

The affected families are taking shelter at a nearby covered court. They were given tents and meals, Sandoval said.

According to a News5 report, the residents helped firefighters put out the fire by getting water in a nearby creek.

In Navotas, 14 families were displaced by a fire that struck a fish port in Barangay North Bay Boulevard North on Friday.

Mayor John Rey Tiangco said he provided assistance to the fire victims.
