ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture destroyed on Thursday 2.5 tons of smuggled imported white onions seized in the cargo area of the Zamboanga International Airport in this city.
Arne Senon, Bureau of Plant Industry-Plant Quarantine Services officer-in-charge, said the smuggled onions, which were set to be shipped to Manila, were intercepted on Sept. 29.
The consignee did not show up to claim the cargo, which did not have pertinent documents.
Senon said the smuggled onions were destroyed because it could not be ascertained if these were still fit for human consumption.
